Jason Allen, former University of Arkansas quarterback, and Gus Malzahn, Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator, University of Tulsa, led a quarterback school in Northwest Arkansas. That summer the Northwest Arkansas Quarterback School had 25 quarterbacks from around the area for a three day event. It was through this event that led to the creation of the Top Gun Challenge in 2004. Both Gus and Jason had a desire to work on improving and influencing quarterback play in the state, and the concept of competing for a champion was an instant draw for players, coaches, fans, and media throughout the state. It is now the goal of high school quarterbacks in Arkansas to be invited to compete in the Challenge each July.
Challenge participants and champions include Mitch Mustain (USC), Matt Simpson (Harvard), Jim Youngblood & Tyler Wilson (Arkansas), Stefan Loucks (Texas Tech), AJ Whitmore (Tulsa), Cody Kirby (Missouri State), Eli Cranor (Florida Atlantic), Dallas McCutcheon (Air Force) and many others who are in the college game today.
